Finding your personal style: Re-creating looks from our favourite runway collections

Posted by Kimberley Meyers on

We are diving into the concept of drawing inspiration from a collection while making it uniquely yours, showing that crafting a runway-inspired look doesn’t always mean you have to purchase an entirely new wardrobe. It’s about interpreting the collection in a way that aligns with your personal style, using the pieces you already own, shopping pre-loved or seeking out specific elements that reflect the vibe you love.

LOOK 1: Gucci

Gucci 'Malaga Kid' Pearl Studded Vegas Platform Loafers Size 40 $729 / Zimmermann 'Devi' Lurex Pleated Midi Skirt Size 0 $249.00 / Matteau Rib Knit Vest Size 4 | 12 $149 / Thierry Colson Blouse Size S $249 / THP Faux Fur Jacket Size 4 | 12 $159

When working on developing your personal style, one of the best starting points is to explore collections or designers whose aesthetic resonates with you! Take time to examine the details, whether it's the colour palette, the textures, the way garments fit, or the overall mood and energy of the collection.

By focusing on these aspects, you can start to identify key pieces or themes that you want to incorporate into your own wardrobe, helping you curate a style that feels both inspired and authentic to you.

LOOK 2: Dolce & Gabbana

Dolce & Gabbana Re-Edition Kim Corset Top Size IT 42 | AU 10 $399.00 / Balmain High-Rise Leopard-Print Midi Skirt Size FR 38 | AU 10 $989 / Gucci Patent Leather D'Orsay Ankle Strap Pumps Size 40 $449

1. Break down the look

  • Find a 'Hero' garment: Choose one or two standout pieces from the runway collection. For instance, if a collection features oversized trench coats or statement suits, focus on those as your starting point.

  • Layering: Runway looks often layer multiple elements—pairing textures or styles in unexpected ways. Consider how you can layer similar pieces in your wardrobe (e.g., pairing a midi skirt with a graphic tee and a structured blazer).

2. Adapt for your lifestyle

  • Mix High and Low: Not everything from the runway is practical or affordable for day-to-day wear. Incorporate runway-inspired elements such as a high quality blazer, handbag or shoes with more accessible, high-street pieces to create an affordable yet stylish outfit.

3. Make it yours

  • Add Personal Touches: Think about how you can inject your personal style into the outfit. This could mean adding vintage items, your favourite pieces of jewellery or whatever element of clothing feels like you!

4. Don't be afraid to 'Play'

  • Play dress up in your own wardrobe: Turn it into a fun afternoon. Take the time to experiment with different combinations, mix and match pieces, and see what works and even what doesn’t. Try everything on, and pay attention to how each outfit makes you feel. Notice what feels most authentic to your personal style and what gives you confidence. The process is all about enjoying the creative journey and having fun with fashion.
