Hey Andrea! It's so nice to catch up with you again. How are you today?
Hey lovely, you too! I am really good thanks :)I can’t wait 'til winter, put it that way!
We're slowly getting there! Autumn already. Over the past year COVID-19 has definitely hit everyone in the arts industry hard, I can imagine styling being one of those industries. Did you take much time off work?
It really did, but we are so grateful to be in WA now compared to the rest of the world. I did when we first went into lockdown. When we slowly went to lighter phases (I can’t remember the phase , I think maybe 3, where you could go out and wear a mask but only 10-15 people allowed in a room or something like that) I did do some shoots, socially distanced and safe of course (there were also only 4 of us in the studio, too).
It's good to hear you were able to get back into it sooner rather than later. How long have you been styling, and how did you get into it?
6 years this year, which is crazy! I studied styling with amazing stylist Ivanna Fontana just for fun to be honest, I think was trying to make it in to the fashion event scene so I started interning at local designer Jontè Designs, in the hopes of learning to produce fashion shows but one of things I ended up doing was, assisting shoots and that became my new passion. Jontè would trust me to take her garments to shoots with photographers on her behalf which gave me confidence and the more and more I did shoots the more I found my own styling style, if that makes sense.
Oh, we love Jonte's work! And what's been your favourite thing about styling? Is it the people, the brainstorming of ideas, or maybe something else?
It's everything! Fashion editorial wise, its my way of expressing myself. Personal shopping wise, nothing makes me happier when I style someone and see how confident and happy they feel in a new outfit that highlights their features. People wise, I just love being around creatives.
I can imagine that would be a good feeling! We have loved working with you on a number of our Consigner's shoots. What's been your favourite Consigner's Closet shoot with us?
ALL OF THEM! Honestly you girls are such an amazing team to work with !! I love how you guys have a vision, are so organised and then let me kind of add my 'pizzazz' to your concept, so thank you.
And what's your DREAM styling job?! Anyone locally or nationally you'd love to style/dress?Would probably be an editorial for GCDS styling Harry Styles and Hailey Bieber located in artsy Berlin.
Yes and yes to Harry Styles, an icon! What would be your advice for someone who's interested in getting into styling, any tips?Get out of your comfort zone, that’s where the magic happens. I would say first message some stylists you admire and ask if you can assist them on some shoots, attend networking events (and/or art and fashion events) and when you feel ready, plan a photoshoot! It's not a bad idea to have a mentor too. Find someone you really admire - stylist, designer or photographer and ask them to assist.
Where can we see more of your beautiful styling work?
I am working on my website at the moment but best place is probably my Instagram @andrealewin_
